Hevi Kurnia Hardini is one of the successful alumni of the Government Studies Program at UMM who has become an academic. Graduating in 2002, she has excelled in her career as an academician. In 2009, she was awarded the Australia Development Scholarship to pursue her Master’s degree at Flinders University in Australia. This mother of two is disciplined, energetic, focused, and professional in carrying out her duties as a lecturer and scholar. Her unique teaching style has made her popular among students. Discipline and academic insight were qualities she built while she was a student. During her undergraduate years, she was an active student leader holding significant positions in both intra- and extra-campus organizations.
“I am an alumna of the Government Studies Program at UMM, and now I dedicate myself to my alma mater. My principle as a student was to not only excel academically but also to be a capable organizer. The key to success is good time management. Alhamdulillah, even when I was entrusted with the position of Chairperson of HIMAP for the 2001-2002 period and held positions in other intra- and extra-campus student organizations, my GPA was always above 3.7 every semester. I believe that formal education and organizational involvement complement each other,” she shared, recounting her journey as an undergraduate student in the Government Studies Program at FISIP UMM.
With the experience and achievements gained during her undergraduate years, she was entrusted with an extraordinary opportunity by Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang to become a lecturer in the Government Studies Department. “When I graduated, the achievements I had earned opened the door to a great opportunity to become a lecturer in the Government Studies Program at UMM. At that moment, I made it my priority to bring the name of the Government Studies Program at UMM to the international stage, and I started with myself. There is no reason why IP graduates should only focus on domestic affairs, and I believe that the field of foreign politics also needs experts in domestic governance. With the incredible support from IP UMM, I seriously pursued proficiency in English, both spoken and written, and gradually worked through the learning process. Eventually, I realized my ‘Go International’ spirit by applying for an overseas scholarship. Alhamdulillah, Allah SWT gave me the opportunity as a recipient of the Australia Development Scholarship in 2009 to continue my studies in Master of Asian Governance at Flinders University, Australia, from 2010 to 2012,” she said enthusiastically.
With determination, hard work, and prayers, she successfully completed her Master’s degree on time. Now, she has returned with renewed energy to push for the internationalization of the Government Studies Program. “Upon returning from Australia, I upgraded my 'Go International' spirit to institutionalize it. With the A accreditation that the IP UMM program has achieved, we are now laying the groundwork for the international journey of IP UMM. Insya Allah, in the near future, the use of English in the teaching and learning process will be promoted, international collaborations are being initiated, and the formation of International Classes (classes with English as the medium of instruction) is being discussed at the faculty level for realization in the near future,” said Hevi Kurnia Hardini, S.IP., MA.Gov. when interviewed by a Prodipnews reporter at the Government Studies Office, FISIP UMM.
