Muhammad Iqbal Thoriq, a student of the Government Studies Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, class of 2021, had the opportunity to intern at the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS) in South Jakarta. His research internship in Jakarta lasted four months, from July 15 to November 15, 2024.

Interning at the Ministry of National Development Planning/BAPPENAS was something I had not imagined before. I had always thought that I would intern in a regional setting, but when the announcement came, I was placed at the central office. I did not waste this internship opportunity, as it will change my perspective, mindset, and future relationships once I return from BAPPENAS. In today’s world, especially in terms of networking, it is highly valuable. Therefore, I made every effort to expand my professional network, said Iqbal.

Interning at the Ministry of National Development Planning/BAPPENAS had a positive impact on me. I was placed at the Regional II Directorate, specifically in the K2 section, which focuses on territorial planning, especially in Kalimantan and Sulawesi. The experience during this internship allowed me to follow the processes within the institution where I was interning and conducting research.

“I was also involved in discussions about the Master Plan for Balikpapan, which includes the regulations derived from the National Capital City (IKN) project, preparing materials to report to the Regional II Coordinator regarding the smart city initiative to be implemented in IKN, and I also participated in a webinar publication conducted by several divisions at BAPPENAS,” Thoriq shared.

Through this government research internship program, I gained many positive experiences, from familiarizing myself with a new work environment, learning new work patterns, building relationships across various age groups and fields, which will make it easier for me in the future. I also had the chance to implement what I had been taught in the classroom into the work environment. It was truly a pleasure to meet important figures I never thought I would encounter.

Thoriq also encouraged his peers: “For the future, I hope you all continue to strive for your goals and dare to step out of your comfort zones to achieve the dreams you have envisioned.”
