Malang, January 5, 2024 – The Student Association of the Government Studies Program (HIMAP) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) organized an Opinion Writing Training Workshop with the theme “Strengthening Students’ Ideas and Reasoning in Crafting Narratives through Opinion Writing.” The event took place in the 6th-floor hall of the Main Lecture Building (GKB 3) at UMM.

The event began at 14:15 and was attended by students from the Government Studies Program, UMM, from the 2022 and 2023 cohorts. Aldi Kusuma, a member of HIMAP's Education and Reasoning Division, served as the event coordinator. The speaker for this workshop was Bahtiar S.Hib.Int, who had previously served as the Editor-in-Chief of Dermotimes.com from 2022-2023.

The purpose of this Opinion Writing Training was to educate students on the importance of writing opinion pieces that could later be published in print or digital media. The speaker provided insights into forming opinions and the necessary skills for writing, including determining the theme to be discussed, building an opinion framework, different writing styles, and how to properly select data. “Don’t write just because of a requirement or anything else, but from the concerns you have that are poured into an opinion. Write with your heart, or make writing your beloved character,” explained the speaker.

In addition to the material presentation, the speaker also analyzed one of his own opinion pieces published in a digital media outlet titled "DEMOKRASI MANDEK: What’s Happening in Indonesia?". The speaker began breaking down his opinion piece, starting with the background of its formation, the urgency of the opinion, and the form of argumentation used.

The Opinion Writing Training Workshop was attended by 27 students from the 2023 cohort and 6 students from the 2022 cohort. The workshop concluded at 16:00 with the presentation of certificates by the event coordinator to the speaker.
