UMM Government Studies Program Welcomes New Students with an Inaugural Lecture Featuring Alumni Practitioners

Malang, September 12, 2024—A total of 89 new students of the Government Studies Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) participated in the department’s orientation program and inaugural lecture. These students hail not only from East Java but also from various regions across Indonesia. The inaugural lecture featured prominent alumni of the program, including H. Rokhmad, S.Sos, a member of Malang City Council for the 2024–2029 term; Heru Mulyono, S.IP., MT, Head of Malang City Public Order Agency (Satpol PP); and Yana Safriyanana Hijri, S.IP., M.IP, a lecturer in the Government Studies Program.

The event was also attended by faculty members, staff, departmental assistants, and laboratory assistants. This year’s orientation and inaugural lecture carried the theme “Challenges and Opportunities for Government Studies in Gen 24.” Besides delivering material, the speakers also shared motivational insights and advice for the 2024 cohort of new students.

“As students, you should not only focus on academic activities but also actively participate in organizations. Through organizational involvement, you will gain extraordinary lessons and experiences,” said H. Rokhmad, S.Sos.

In his presentation, Muhammad Kamil, S.IP., MA, Head of the Government Studies Program, introduced all faculty members and explained the academic processes. He stated, “At UMM’s Government Studies Program, you have the opportunity to graduate on time, or even in 3.5 years without a thesis, by achieving certain milestones such as qualifying for PIMNAS (National Student Science Week), running your own business, or publishing a journal article in at least a SINTA 3-indexed journal.”

The event also included an introduction to the Government Studies Laboratory, presented by Ali Roziqin, M.PA, Head of the Laboratory. “Our program has a laboratory that supports students’ learning activities,” he explained. The laboratory offers various facilities for students, such as a mini library, a podcast studio, and more.

The new students, referred to as Gen Z, are expected to become creative, innovative, and collaborative individuals to realize the vision of Strengthening Dynamic Governance.
