The Association of Government Science Students (HIMAP) at UMM held the Basic Student Leadership Training (LDKM) from October 15 to 16, 2011, at the Military Base of Abdurrochman Saleh Airport, Malang. This regular activity aims to develop the leadership character of Government Science students in governance, social, and political fields. The two-day LDKM featured a different approach compared to previous events.

“This LDKM period adopts a semi-military approach, unlike previous implementations, which focused monotonously on theoretical leadership materials without practical application,” said Agung Kurniawan, Chairman of HIMAP. While using a semi-military approach, the training does not aim to instill an authoritarian military mindset or foster a passive command system as in the military. Instead, students are introduced to military leadership values such as discipline and egalitarian firmness, added Agung, as he is commonly called.

The LDKM, attended by Government Science students from the 2011 batch, included lectures and outbound activities. The lectures were delivered by faculty members and military personnel, while the outbound sessions were guided by military officers stationed at Abdurrochman Saleh Airport, explained Agus Amir, the event’s committee chairman.

During the event, a minor incident occurred at the opening ceremony, where some students fainted due to the heat. However, the situation was well-managed, and the event continued smoothly. Participants expressed their enjoyment of the LDKM activities, added Agus.
